On 9th November 1989 after weeks of disturbances and demonstrations, the Wall of Berlin was run over by East–Berlin people. The euphoria was enormous: 29 years of separation between East– and West Berlin came to an end. The German reunification took place one year later on 3 October 1990. However, these historical events could not have happened without the approval of the Soviet Union and the contribution of other former socialist countries. This thesis is aimed at proving in what way Hungary prepared the way and contributed to the regime change of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the reunion of East and West Germany. It claims that by opening its borders Hungary encouraged GDR people in their country to express their discontent, which they suppressed before. This put such an enormous pressure on their leadership that they eventually took those steps which led to the fall of the Wall and German reunification.
